Wellington Equine Services provides both Pre-purchase and Insurance exams. Pre-purchase exams are done for the buyer of a horse. They are invaluable to ensure you are buying the right horse for you. Knowing what discipline you intend for the horse will help the veterinarian decide whether the horse is a good match or not. A lot of time and money is involved in purchasing a horse, so do not be hasty in your decision.
Guidelines
A veterinarian should not do a pre-purchase for a horse with who they know the seller. This is a conflict of interest and a bad idea. No information will be released to the seller unless it is with the buyer’s permission. Do not accept a seller’s claim that a horse has been ‘vetted’ because this may just mean they have seen a veterinarian previously. A pre-purchase is a fact-finding session and can be very informative for the buyer and seller. It is in no way a guarantee on your horse’s future health or soundness but a present day assessment. All horse’s have defects and can develop a condition at any point in time. A veterinarian cannot give you a value assessment for the horse. That is your decision and different people will pay different prices for the same horse. It is also important to discuss with your veterinarian before the exam what you consider a certain level of ‘perfection’ the horse must have for the use you have in mind. A veterinarian will go over the horse with a fine tooth comb and discuss any abnormalities or blemishes with you. No horse is perfect, but can you live with his problems?
Whats performed
Pre-purchase exams performed by Wellington Equine Services provide a general health exam, superficial eye exam and flexion tests. Radiographs are additional and can be performed with our digital x-ray machine. This saves time and frequents visits to the farm to get perfect radiographs. After the exam, we will discuss our findings with you and may recommend additional tests, exams or x-rays. Finally, you will receive a written report of our findings. The whole exam may take between 1.5 to 3 hours to complete.
Your horse isn’t ordinary and that’s why we are dedicated to providing exceptional care.
